Maybe this is common knowledge, but I just wanted to bring it to your attention in case someone missed it. Iron & Wine has a cover of Postal Service's "Such Great Heights." It's fantastic. It's super slow and acoustic and very beautiful.
So... listen to it.
So... listen to it.

Sun, February 8, 2004 - 12:13 AMIf you're a guitar player, put your capo on the 7th fret for that one:
Cx2 Gx2
Fx2 (with just the root and 5th) C G
It's very beautiful version. -

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, February 17, 2004 - 9:09 AMYeah, the more I listen to the Iron & Wine cover, the more I like it. I see they have something new coming out in March. They sound very much like Canadian folk artist, Hayden. Check out his "Everything I Long For" and "The Closer I Get" discs. His lyrics are brilliant. -

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, February 17, 2004 - 10:03 AM"Skyscraper National Park" is a beautiful Hayden album as well. -

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, February 17, 2004 - 12:01 PMI do like that one as well. It's a bit newer than the others. I tend to like Hayden's older stuff. It just seems to have more emotion and meaning. Ever seen him live? It's amazing. In the studio, he plays all his own instruments. On tour, he brings extra musicians to man the bass, drums & piano. But these guys don't stick to the same instrument. After each song, they trade. They guy on the piano grabs the bass, the bass player takes his place behind the drums and the drummer hops on the piano. Leave it to Hayden to travel with such talent. -

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, February 17, 2004 - 12:28 PMI saw him at The Knitting Factory in New York and it was just him and a drum machine (which he used on 2 or 3 tracks). I believe he had some violin and cello players come out for a track or two as well. -

Thu, February 26, 2004 - 8:43 AMHave you guys heard the Shins cover of PS's 'we will become shilouttes'? It's soooo good. Very quirky - just like you'd expect from the Shins.
The Iron and Wine version gives me chills! -
-
Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Thu, February 26, 2004 - 9:09 AMYeah, the Shins cover is great! I hadn't heard of the Shins or Iron & Wine prior to these covers. I've picked up the Shins new Chutes Too Narrow CD. Very good. I'm also awaiting the release of the new Iron & Wine. -

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Thu, February 26, 2004 - 3:40 PMI'm glad you're diggin the Shins. If you find yourself thirsty for more of their stuff, they have a previous release PLUS a very early release when they went by a different name: FLAKE MUSIC. It's all great stuff.

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 7:52 AMI don't know...I've tried, but I can't get into the Iron and Wine version. Doesn't seem to have the soul the original does. Don't kill me, just my opinion. :) And cool to see Hayden mentioned on here...I don't have his latest one, but he's deeply talented.

Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 9:01 AMIt is actually, originally an Iron and Wine song...PS is doing the cover. -
-
Re: Maybe this is common knowledge...
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 7:35 PMNo, it's a Postal Service song. Iron & Wine is covering it. Refer to the Such Great Heights CDS..."all songs written by Ben..". You won't find the track on any release under the Iron & Wine name. Just the PS CDS and now the Garden State soundtrack. -

Wed, September 14, 2005 - 1:36 PMI saw the Dresden Dolls play in Seattle - dresdendolls.tribe.net - and for the encore they played a cover of Such Great Heights. OH if I could only find a recording of that performance! She also did a cover of War Pigs too... but that is a little OT. :)
