on mainstream radio

During my daily commute, I shamefully listen to the local "alternative" radio station to kill time. It's mostly a lot of catchy, but otherwise worthless tunes like Blink 182, Linkin Park and the like. I recently had a horrifying experience, appropriately on Friday the 13th. I heard the opening tones of "Such Great Heights" and stared at the radio in disbelief, thinking it simply sounded similar. After a few seconds, I could no longer pretend it wasn't happenning. The Postal Service was being played on the radio. Unreal.

Is this happenning in other areas of the country?

I see you're in Baltimore--are you talking about HFS? Maybe 10-15 years ago that would have been wonderful, but since CBS bought the station it just sucks completely.

Yeah, back in the day they really did play stuff that you wouldn't hear elsewhere. Now, they're just targeting the mindless masses.

Not to mention that I was just on the subpop website, and there's a link to MTV for a clip of their video of "such great heights".

Lewis Black says it best about MTV: "If you get a vision in your head after you listen to some music, and you go home and turn on MTV, and the video they show is the vision you had, kill yourself."

Hi BTW - I'm new to the group, been listening to Postal Service since about the time the cd was released, and i'm pretty damn shocked like I always am when a group makes it big with music that touches me. I even heard that it was the #1 requested song on the big alt. station in L.A. Congrats to the band for their sucesses however.

They are getting quite a bit of radio time here in Southern Oregon. Shocking.

First it was Modest Mouse, then Death Cab and now The Postal Service. Face it I know the music that I have listened to since I was 15 is now being broadcasted on mainstream radio throughout the states. It sucks!!! I went to go see Death Cab last week and figured I could buy my ticket at the door. I show up only to see it sold out. And guess what the fans looked like, besides the black hiar and fake glasses...I was surrounded by young teenage girls wearing tight tank tops and flaired pants who looked to be about 16 years old. The funniest part was a teenage boy wearing an Acorombie and Fitch shirt. Fucking Hell!!!!!

i heard postal service on the radio last january, if it makes you feel any better...or worse. and it was on an "alternative" station...they played a lot of soundgarden still, though...so i was always wierded by them. but whatever....i've given up. i started listening to modest mouse about 6 years ago...and now i can't pretend my music is indie. its wierd, i feel like i cant call my music indie rock anymore...thouhg, i never considered myself an indie rocker....but i think we can say goodbye to our little world guys!

Well you should still call it indie because that is what it is. I have heard younger kids call it emo, but that is not what it is. And don't give up on great bands ...... I mean I used to skateboard and go to parties, but now that is so mainstream. It doesn't matter what we do anymore....everything is so trendy. Just look at converse and dickies...hehehe makes me sick, but what are we gonna do?

o yeah...i mean...i gave up on it being "my little secret" now i just listen to whatever is good...regardless of how mainstream it is. if i gave up on things that were cool just because they're mainstream...i wouldn't be into anything

I'm very conflicted about the success of Postal Service and the like. On the one hand, I love that the 80's influence is so prominate and I'm glad the masses are being exposed to good music. On the other hand, I like my alternative / underground music to stay that way and I'm not happy about indie music becoming the grunge of this era. I blame SubPop for promoting Postal Service and Modest Mouse as they did Nirvana and the like in the 90's. In fact, it makes me ill that there is even a parallel between Postal Service and Nirvana.

i also was the skateboard kid wearing converse in the 80s... i think its cool that younger kids are getting exposed to this type of music and its readily acceptable and acessible... parents seem more open to it as well than parents in the 80s

seeing kids with the cure t-shirts for example, I saw a girl who was 16 with a kiss me shirt (I told her I saw that tour, which was of course before she was even born) - scary... but still cool

I am vey happy about modest mouse's success. I mean they deserve it, but there is something about having a music that is all your own you know??
Sometimes I actually do get really mad about things like this because its everything that I am into getting so mainstream, but this is where I gotta stop and think. Hey i should just like what I like. The only thing that makes me mad about this whole issue us that skating and indie and punk (well pop-punk) is a big fad right now and that is all it is. I see people walking down the streets with skate clothes and a skate board, but they are just holding their skateboard like it is an accessori and that is lame. But I am gonns quit tyon now...its like I am writing a book>

the postal service and death cab are both still getting a lot of airplay in san francisco. i wont go see death cab anymore because i would have to go to the warfield (2nd biggest venue in the city) instead of maxwells in hoboken (about the size of my living room) like i did in high school. its ridiculous.

ah, gibbard and his money making...

can't say i wont be a fan tomorrow, though.

    i'm new here. love me.

"I blame SubPop for promoting Postal Service and Modest Mouse as they did Nirvana and the like in the 90's."

subpop is a record label, they're in the business of selling records, so of course they're going to promote their bands. they want to make money. so do the bands, and they deserve to. personally it doesn't bug me anymore when bands i like popular. in high school i literally cried at an REM concert because there were so many people there, they weren't "my" band anymore, but these days i can't begrudge a band their popularity, i think it's great for them that people are listening to them and want to see them live. having been closely involved in the indie music scene, i can tell you there's nothing more depressing than having a poor turnout at your gig.

plus there are plenty of "genuinely" indie bands out there to love still. listen to college radio and you'll find all sorts of great stuff that isn't getting played on mainstream radio or doing gigs at the awful warfield.

Lets lock all the good bands underground somewhere so no one can hear them....that would pretty indie....no lets give'em lots money to express themself more.....nah then they end up sounding like crap...But they'll be rich...and i won't...sigh
